Five traders were allegedly robbed of ₹21.85 lakh in cash and five mobile phones in a daylight incident near the Radisson Blu Hotel area in Guwahati on Thursday, May 21.
The incident reportedly took place near the Boragaon flyover and Radisson Blu stretch, one of Guwahati’s important highway-linked corridors connecting Jalukbari, Boragaon and routes towards Lower Assam. Police have launched an investigation, and no arrests have been reported so far.
Five traders were allegedly robbed of ₹21.85 lakh and five mobile phones near Guwahati’s Radisson Blu Hotel area on May 21. The accused reportedly posed as security personnel, intercepted the traders’ vehicle near the Boragaon-Jalukbari highway stretch and fled with the cash, phones and car keys.
According to reports, the victims were returning from Umsning in Meghalaya after selling an excavator and were carrying a large amount of cash. They were allegedly followed by a four-wheeler from the Boragaon flyover area before being intercepted near a petrol pump close to Radisson Blu.
The accused reportedly arrived in a white Mahindra Bolero bearing registration number AS-01AV-1036. Reports said the vehicle had an Army cap placed at the front, and the miscreants allegedly posed as Army or security personnel to gain the victims’ trust.
The traders alleged that the accused stepped out wearing army-style clothing, caps and uniforms resembling military attire. They allegedly stopped the vehicle on the pretext of conducting a drug search operation and claimed that the victims were involved in drug-related activity.
During the alleged search, the miscreants forced the traders out of their vehicle and checked their belongings. They then allegedly snatched a bag containing ₹21.85 lakh in cash, five mobile phones and the car keys.
The victims further claimed that the accused misled them by saying a police officer from Jalukbari Police Station was on the way. They were allegedly instructed to report to the police station before the miscreants fled the spot with the cash and valuables.
For Guwahati, the incident is significant because it occurred on a busy highway-linked stretch near Boragaon and Radisson Blu, an area used daily by commuters, business travellers and vehicles moving between the city, Meghalaya routes and Lower Assam.
The Boragaon-Jalukbari corridor is one of Guwahati’s critical road stretches, connecting the city to National Highway movement and major exit points. Any crime reported from this zone raises concerns around highway surveillance, vehicle interception, impersonation and commuter safety.
Police investigation is now expected to focus on identifying the accused, tracing the vehicle used in the alleged robbery, examining CCTV footage from the Radisson Blu and Boragaon stretch, and verifying the sequence of events reported by the victims.
Residents and travellers in Guwahati are advised to remain cautious if stopped by unknown persons claiming to be security personnel. In such situations, commuters should verify identity, avoid handing over cash or valuables, and contact the nearest police station or emergency helpline if they suspect impersonation.
The next development will depend on the police investigation and whether the accused are identified through vehicle tracking, CCTV footage or witness inputs. For the public, the case highlights the need for caution during high-value cash movement and for stronger vigilance along Guwahati’s busy highway corridors.
