Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Northeast India’s first Emergency Landing Facility at Moran, Dibrugarh, on February 14. The dual-use facility can handle fighter aircraft up to 40 tonnes and transport aircraft up to 74 tonnes, strengthening regional emergency and defence infrastructure.

Strategic Infrastructure for the Northeast

The Emergency Landing Facility has been developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force as dual-use infrastructure.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the ELF is designed to:

  • Support fighter aircraft weighing up to 40 tonnes
  • Accommodate transport aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of up to 74 tonnes
  • Enable both military and civilian emergency operations

The facility is expected to serve as a strategic asset in disaster response and logistical operations in the region.

Importance for Assam and Guwahati

Although located in Moran, the development holds significance for Guwahati and the broader Northeast.

As Assam’s largest city and administrative hub, Guwahati often coordinates disaster management and relief efforts during floods and other emergencies.

Enhanced airstrip capabilities in Upper Assam can strengthen the rapid deployment of:

  • Relief materials
  • Rescue personnel
  • Medical support

The infrastructure boost complements the ongoing expansion of strategic and transport networks across the state.

Next Stop: Guwahati

Following the inauguration in Moran, the Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to Guwahati.

In the city, he will:

  • Inaugurate the 6-lane Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati
  • Launch and flag off projects worth over ₹5,450 crore at Lachit Ghat

The bridge, built at an estimated cost of ₹3,030 crore, is expected to significantly improve connectivity across the Brahmaputra.

What Happens Next?

With the ELF now operational, defence and disaster-response agencies may integrate it into future strategic planning and emergency drills.

Further infrastructure projects in Guwahati are expected to be formally launched during the Prime Minister’s visit.
