The Assam government on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur, Guwahati, to conduct pre-feasibility studies for five new greenfield airports across the state. The move is aimed at strengthening intra-state air connectivity and promoting tourism and economic growth.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was present during the signing, along with senior AAI officials.
The Assam government signed an MoU with the Airports Authority of India in Guwahati to study the feasibility of five new greenfield airports in Manas, Umrangso, Majuli, Diphu and Charaideo. The initiative aims to improve intra-state connectivity, tourism and strategic infrastructure development.
MoU Signed at Lok Sewa Bhawan, Dispur
The agreement was formalised at the state secretariat in Dispur, Guwahati.
Under the MoU, AAI will conduct pre-feasibility studies to assess technical, environmental and operational viability before further steps are taken.
For Guwahati, which currently serves as Assam’s primary aviation hub through Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, the expansion of regional airports could reduce travel pressure and decentralise air traffic.
Proposed Locations for New Airports
The five proposed greenfield airport sites are:
- Manas National Park
- Umrangso (Dima Hasao district)
- Majuli
- Diphu
- Charaideo
These locations were identified for their geographical significance and tourism potential.
Focus on Intra-State Connectivity
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the objective is to improve regional connectivity through smaller aircraft operations within Assam.
“Our Dima Hasao is as beautiful as Shillong. We are making efforts to ensure that small aircraft can ferry passengers from one destination to another within the state,” Sarma stated.
Improved intra-state air routes could allow faster travel between Guwahati and remote districts, particularly hill and riverine regions.
Tourism and Strategic Considerations
The Chief Minister noted that the airport plan has been prepared with tourism growth and national defence considerations in mind.
Locations like Majuli and Manas are major tourist attractions, and improved connectivity could increase visitor footfall from Guwahati and other parts of India.
What Happens Next?
AAI will now conduct pre-feasibility assessments at the identified sites.
Only after technical and environmental evaluations are completed will decisions be taken on project timelines and implementation.
