Guwahati’s much-awaited Cycle Factory–Lal Ganesh flyover, officially named the Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee Flyover, has been inaugurated, giving the city a major new link for daily traffic movement in the Lal Ganesh, Lokhra and Cycle Factory belt.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formally inaugurated the flyover on Friday, May 22. The project has been developed to ease congestion in one of Guwahati’s busiest urban corridors and improve connectivity in the city’s south-western region.

The Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee Flyover connects the Cycle Factory–Lal Ganesh corridor in Guwahati and is expected to reduce congestion for commuters travelling through Lal Ganesh, Lokhra, Barasapara, Bhetkuchi and nearby areas. The 2.8-km flyover was built at a cost of ₹376 crore and completed in 26 months.

According to reports, the flyover is 2.8 km long and was constructed at a cost of ₹376 crore. The project was completed in 26 months, four months ahead of its stipulated 30-month completion timeline.

The inauguration marks a significant addition to Guwahati’s traffic infrastructure, particularly for residents and commuters who regularly move through Lal Ganesh, Lokhra, Cycle Factory, Barasapara, Bhetkuchi and nearby residential areas.

The stretch has long witnessed heavy vehicle movement during office hours, school timings, market hours and event days. With the new flyover now opened, commuters are expected to get smoother movement across the corridor and reduced pressure at key junctions.

Chief Minister Sarma said the flyover would help reduce travel time for patients travelling from B Borooah Cancer Institute and Pragjyotishpur Medical College towards NH-27. He also said it would decongest one of Guwahati’s densely populated areas and improve movement towards Barasapara and Bhetkuchi.

The project also includes service road improvements under the flyover. Sarma said the service road below the structure is six metres wide and has two-metre-wide RCC drains, which are expected to improve movement on the Guwahati–Garbhanga road stretch.

During the inauguration, the Chief Minister also mentioned that two additional lanes would be built. One lane is expected to connect towards the Barasapara Cricket Stadium side, while another will link towards the Cycle Factory area.

For Guwahati residents, the flyover is important not only as a traffic project but also as part of the city’s larger urban mobility upgrade. Over the past few years, flyovers have become central to the government’s traffic management approach in high-density parts of the city.

The naming of the flyover after Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee was also highlighted during the inauguration. Sarma referred to Mookherjee’s historical role and said his contributions to Assam and the Northeast should be remembered by future generations.

The immediate public focus will now be on how effectively traffic is regulated around the flyover, especially at entry and exit points. Service road usage, drainage management, pedestrian safety and traffic discipline will be key factors in determining whether the project delivers long-term relief.

For Guwahati, the opening of the flyover matters because it directly affects everyday mobility in a densely used corridor. If managed well, it can reduce travel time, improve access to hospitals and residential areas, and make movement smoother across the Lal Ganesh–Cycle Factory–Lokhra zone.
