An illegal dumping site opposite Noonmati High School in Guwahati continues to accumulate garbage despite repeated clean-up drives by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The area has reportedly been cleared multiple times, but waste keeps reappearing.

Residents and shopkeepers in the vicinity are allegedly dumping waste in the open, citing irregular door-to-door garbage collection and logistical gaps in the system.

An illegal dumping site opposite Noonmati High School in Guwahati continues to pile up with waste despite repeated GMC clean-ups. Activists say inconsistent door-to-door collection and non-payment of user fees by some shopkeepers have contributed to recurring garbage accumulation and foul smell in the area.

Repeated Clean-Ups, But Waste Returns

Civic workers have cleared the site several times. However, the garbage heap reportedly reappears within days.

The location, situated along a busy stretch in Noonmati, has become a concern for residents and students due to recurring waste accumulation and foul odour.

Gaps in Collection Services Alleged

Speaking to GPlus, Milin Dutta, an official of Anaajoree, said inconsistent waste collection timing has contributed to the issue.

“The absence of consistent door-to-door garbage collection and mismatched collection timings have contributed to the problem. In some cases, shopkeepers have reportedly refused to pay the monthly user fee for waste collection, leading to waste being thrown in open spaces,” he said.

He further stated that waste transfer activities are reportedly taking place at the same spot, adding to the garbage build-up.

Impact on Schools and Surroundings

The dumping site lies opposite Noonmati High School and near other educational institutions, including Assam Jatiya Bidyalay.

Members of the Anaajoree team recently visited both institutions to discuss the issue and encourage awareness among students and the local community regarding responsible waste disposal.

The initiative aims to involve schools in promoting cleaner surroundings and community participation.

A Recurring Civic Challenge in Guwahati

Illegal dumping remains a challenge in several parts of Guwahati, particularly where collection services face coordination issues.

While GMC continues clean-up efforts, long-term solutions may require improved collection schedules, stricter enforcement, and cooperation from residents and businesses.

What Happens Next?

Activists and civic authorities are expected to continue discussions to address the root causes of repeated dumping at the Noonmati site.

Residents have called for stricter monitoring and improved waste collection consistency to prevent further accumulation.
