The South Guwahati West Water Supply Project (SGWWSP) marked a major milestone on January 21 with the partial commissioning of key infrastructure, bringing treated and piped drinking water closer to residents in several parts of Guwahati. The commissioning was carried out in the presence of Assam’s Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah.

The project is being implemented by the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board and is aimed at ensuring a safe, reliable, and regular water supply across South and West Guwahati.

The South Guwahati West Water Supply Project has been partially commissioned with the completion of the Jalukbari Reservoir and six distribution zones. Around 1,500 households in Jalukbari and nearby areas will benefit initially, while the project is expected to cover nearly 17,000 more households in Guwahati by year-end.

What Was Commissioned

As part of the partial commissioning, authorities completed:

  • The Jalukbari Reservoir
  • Six Distribution Metered Areas (DMAs)

This phase will directly benefit about 1,500 households in Ward No. 2, covering areas such as Jalukbari, the Assam Engineering College vicinity, Sundarbari, and Satmile.

Officials said house service connection works in these localities are expected to begin shortly, enabling residents to receive piped water directly at home.

Why This Matters for Guwahati

Guwahati has long faced challenges related to irregular water supply and dependence on untreated sources. City officials noted that the commissioning of SGWWSP infrastructure is a critical step towards improving public health, reducing waterborne risks, and enhancing the quality of life for urban households.

With Jalukbari and surrounding localities seeing rapid residential growth, the availability of treated water is expected to ease pressure on groundwater and private water sources.

Expansion Plans Across the City

Construction is currently underway in 19 additional DMAs under the same project. Once completed, these phases are expected to extend the water supply network to nearly 17,000 more households by the end of the year.

Areas proposed to be covered include:

  • Boragaon
  • Fatasil Ambari
  • Dhirenpara
  • Garchuk
  • Pamohi
  • Lankeshwar

Officials said the phased expansion is designed to ensure systematic coverage across South and West Guwahati.

Official Remarks

The partial commissioning was carried out in the presence of Jayanta Mallabaruah, Minister, Department of Housing and Urban Affairs (DoHUA), Assam. Authorities said the project aligns with the state’s broader urban infrastructure and public health goals.
